GLORIA
In an evening of music inspired by stories of martyrdom, the Gloria forms a thematic ritornello framing other odes to human sacrifice. Whether a poignant plea for peace, an unraveling Bach-ian spiel or a series of ecstatic explosions, inspired settings by Margutti-Monteverdi, Martin and Woo give new voice to that outburst of lyric poetry among Christians during a time of persecution in the 2nd century. The protomartyr is stoned to death via deconstruction of a medieval round in Body's Carol to St Stephen; and words of the original martyr bring solace in Buchenberg's other-worldly Ich bin das Brot des Lebens. Arrangements in close harmony balance out the programme.
