What does it mean to you?

To me, this is what we are all about. A choir with a humble background which, after four long years, has overcome many obstacles together to be able to stand where it is now.

When Ms Tham first stepped into this school, she brought change, and it was one that would change the choir's history. According to our seniors, before Ms Tham came, the best that the choir could obtain from SYF was a silver (every year). It was no wonder that the CCA itself was looked down upon and priority was given to CCAs such as band or dance. The baton was passed down from Hui Min's batch to Andrea's batch in 2004.

2005 was the year of our first SYF with Ms Tham. We came home with a silver which left most of us crying over split milk. To be honest, it was still too early.

After Andrea's batch stepped down, Pei Hwa's batch took over. At that time, some of the seniors were not interested in choir, and the discipline was outrageous. How many times have we taken the choir for-granted, not coming in together, not following the conductor, forgetting our scores and music, not listening to the other sections, not focusing or breathing properly, and worse, skipped practices in that year alone? It got so bad up to a point when Ms Tham almost walked out on us.

Last year, our batch took over.

For most of us, the Xiamen Choir Olympics would be the most memorable. On the plane to China, we'd already made friends with CHIJ and shared our music together. Not forgetting, of course, the late nights and sectionals in our rooms. I still remember Ms Seow and Mrs Lau reprimanding us for running across the corridors late at night. Yes, and the prank calls. Kalyn has this amazing ability of twisting her voice so much that it sounded like a strangled chicken. The best part? Shopping in Xiamen, playing all those weird hand games while passing time, counting bicycles with Charlotte in the bus (I think we reached a hundred), the gummies everyone was so fascinated about, singing in the bus and sharing our music with other choirs, the poor tour guide whom I doubt anyone listened to, the food in that big hall (yes and the rougu), and the wangzibianqingwa in Laura's room, pinky, and waking up to see the typhoon. Though we didn't get a gold, it was definitely worth the experience as the bonds we shared were strengthened. Surely we came out of China a much stronger, more disciplined choir.

And did you know that our beloved conductors would sit on that blue sofa every night talking about who knows what? (Yeah I caught them doing that on so many nights. Tsk tsk.)

But without the both of them and their passion for singing, the choir wouldn't be where it is right now. And remember all the talks Ms Tham gave before and after all our performances? I'm sure I don't have to remind you guys.

Looking back, we have come a very long way. Four years since our conductors took over, and now we are ever so ready for this upcoming SYF. I'm sure that everyone is very proud of what we have become, but we must never become complacent. In Eunice's last post, she mentioned about not disappointing ourselves, and I agree with her. This is, for the sec 3s and 4s, our last SYF, and for the sec 4s, it will perhaps be the last time we will ever sing with you guys under Ms Tham and Mr Tay. We have worked very hard for this; the seniors who have already graduated, our conductors, and even our teachers.

Before I continue, this is a shout out to all our seniors who never stopped believing in us and thank you for your support! Below is a little something from our sec 4s and our seniors who have graduated:

Back to what I was saying:

We all know that SYF is drawing near. Ms Tham once said that competitions were not about doing better than other choirs, but becoming a better choir and many many other important things. So, when you come to school on Monday for warm-ups, don't run simply for the sake of running. Run, because you know it will help to wake your body up in preparation for SYF. Don't walk even if you feel tired, because it shows that you have given up. Focus, because this is the last lap. And when you are on stage, show the judges how much you love to sing, show Ms Tham and Mr Tay, our teachers and seniors that we are a strong choir, and should you run out of breath, pull up your socks and don't give up because you will regret it.

And the moment the last song ends, we will be all smiles because we have given our best. The audience will clap and we will stand proud as we leave the stage.
